Hojicha Latte

Hojicha may be less well-known than matcha, but this Japanese green tea has a warm, roasted flavor that immediately brings to mind notes of nuts and caramel.
Because the leaves are roasted, Hojicha contains much less caffeine than other green teas, making it ideal for the afternoon or evening. Today we're sharing a simple yet irresistible recipe for a creamy Hojicha Latte .


What is Hojicha?

Hojicha is made from green tea leaves roasted at a low temperature. This process gives the tea a smooth, slightly sweet, nutty flavor without the grassy notes often found in other green teas. The result is a smooth and comforting drink that is both refreshing and relaxing.


Ingredients (for 1 large latte)

  • 2/3 gram Hojicha powder

  • 150 ml hot water (80–90°C)

  • 150 ml milk of your choice – oat milk and almond milk work particularly well

  • 1–2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup (optional)

  • A pinch of cinnamon or cocoa powder as a garnish


Preparation method

1. Make the Hojicha base
Place the hojicha powder in a cup or small bowl. Pour in the hot water and whisk with a bamboo whisk or small whisk until smooth and completely dissolved.

2. Heat the milk
Heat the milk in a saucepan or milk frother until hot but not boiling. For extra creaminess, you can froth the milk.

3. Mix and sweeten
Slowly pour the warm milk into the hojicha base and stir gently. Add a sweetener of your choice, if desired.

4. Finishing and serving
Sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon or cocoa powder for an aromatic touch. Serve immediately and enjoy.
