Perfect with a cup of tea or coffee, these cookies bring a touch of Japanese flavour to a true classic.

Ingredients (for about 12–14 cookies)

  • 150 g (1 ¼ cup) flour

  • 1 ½ tablespoons matcha powder (culinary or latte grade)

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 115 g (½ cup) unsalted butter, at room temperature

  • 100 g (½ cup) white sugar

  • 50 g (¼ cup) brown sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 100 g (¾ cup) dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preparation method

1. Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 175°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.

2. Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, matcha powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. Beat butter and sugars until creamy
In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with the white and brown sugars until light and creamy.

4. Add egg and vanilla
Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until well incorporated.

5. Combine dry and wet
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and stir gently until just combined.

6. Add the chocolate
Fold the chocolate pieces evenly through the mixture.

7. Shape and bake
Place small balls of dough (about 2 tablespoons each) on the baking sheet, leaving plenty of space between them. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.

8. Cool down and enjoy
Let the cookies cool for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm or store in an airtight container.

Tips for the best matcha cookies

  • Use high-quality (culinary grade) matcha for a bright green color and full flavor.

  • For softer cookies: bake for a slightly shorter time and let them set as they cool.

  • For a sweeter contrast, try white chocolate chips.
