Hojicha FAQ

Where does hojicha come from?

All of our matcha and hojicha comes from Japan. We work directly with farms in Kagoshima, Shizuoka, and Kyoto. Sustainability and transparency are important to us. You can see where your matcha comes from on every ASA package.

What is the difference between matcha and hojicha?

Matcha and hojicha are both Japanese green teas, but they differ greatly in taste, color, and effects. Matcha is finely ground green tea made from young leaves and has a fresh, slightly sweet flavor with a natural energy boost from caffeine and L-theanine. Perfect for focus and long-lasting, steady energy.

Hojicha, on the other hand, is roasted green tea, recognizable by its warm brown color and mellow, nutty flavor. Due to the roasting process, hojicha contains much less caffeine, making it ideal for the evening or if you’re sensitive to caffeine. In short: choose matcha for energy and focus, and hojicha for a soothing, low-caffeine moment.

Is the ASA Hojicha Organic?

Yes, all of our hojicha is organically grown in Japan. It is packaged and shipped in the Netherlands, all under strict SKAL certification (NL-BIO-01)

How do I store my hojicha?

Store your hojicha in an airtight container. This can be the bag it comes in, or you can store it in a dark jar with an airtight lid. Make sure it’s protected from air and light. You should also store your hojicha in the refrigerator to maximize its shelf life. Stored this way, hojicha can stay fresh for up to 1.5–2 years.
